Witness Bonjisi

Witness Bonjisi was born in the mid-1970s in the Mutoko district, one of seven children. He completed his early schooling in Domboshava before the family moved to Mabvuku, on the outskirts of Harare.

He began sculpting in 1992, mentored by his older brother Lameck Bonjisi and by the celebrated carver Nicholas Mukomberanwa. After several years apprenticing under them, he began producing and selling his own work independently by the late 1990s.

His sculpture carries a refined, confident line, often noted as more contemporary than the earlier generation of Shona carvers. His work has been shown in the United States and in workshops in Switzerland.
