Nesbert Mukomberanwa

Nesbert Mukomberanwa was born in 1969 in Buhera, central Zimbabwe, into the most celebrated family in Zimbabwean sculpture. In 1987 he began studying under his uncle Nicholas Mukomberanwa, among the most internationally respected artists of the Shona movement.

By 1989 he was ready to work alone, establishing his own workshop in Chitungwiza where he carved for nearly a decade and built an international reputation. In 1998 he moved to the countryside near Dema to concentrate fully on his own work.

He now runs a Village Gallery, showing his own carving alongside work by younger sculptors he mentors. His pieces are held in the permanent collection of the British Museum and have been exhibited in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Britain and the United States.
