Biography

Edward Chiwawa was born in 1935 near Guruve. He learned to carve from his cousin Henry Munyaradzi, and was associated with Tengenenge from the early 1970s, though he sold his work independently rather than through the community.

He became a long-standing member of the National Gallery's sculptor community and exhibited widely across Europe and Australia through the 1980s, including in London, Frankfurt, Sydney, Melbourne, Rome and Paris. In 1987 he won first prize at the 7th International Small Sculpture Exhibition in Budapest.

His work is known for heavy abstraction and fluid, graceful form, and is held in the collection of the Afrika Museum in the Netherlands. He died in October 2022, aged 87.
