Bernard SakarombeBernard Sakarombe grew up in the Tandi rural area near Rusape, in eastern Zimbabwe, and completed his O-Level education at Inyati High School before moving to Harare in search of work.
In 1996 he was introduced to stone sculpting by a group of established carvers, including Washington Musonza, Jonathan Mhondorohuma and Lameck Bonjisi, who became his early mentors. Working alongside them, he gradually developed a style distinctly his own, comfortable carving monument-scale pieces as often as smaller busts.
His work centres on the figure of the woman, exploring motherhood, leadership and everyday beauty, alongside animal studies drawn from a childhood herding cattle. He has worked from the Tsindi Gallery in Harare for more than two decades. New work of his arrives at the park regularly, so ask what is in.
